About Mexico City

Mexico City's Estadio Azteca is the only venue to have hosted two World Cup Finals (1970, 1986). For 2026 it hosts the tournament opener on 11 June (Mexico vs South Africa) plus three other group-stage matches and one knockout fixture.

The city sits at 2,240m altitude — visitors should plan to arrive 2–3 days before matchday to acclimatise. Avoid heavy exertion on day one.

🏘️ Where to stay

  • Roma Norte & Condesa — leafy, walkable, best food and bar scene. 30–40 min to Azteca on matchday.
  • Polanco — upscale, business-traveller favourite, 40–50 min to stadium.
  • Centro Histórico — museums and cathedrals, good for a pre-match day, 35 min to Azteca.
  • Coyoacán — closer to the stadium, Frida Kahlo's neighbourhood, cheaper accommodation.

🚆 Getting around

  • Metro Line 2 (blue) connects directly to Estadio Azteca station. Cheapest option but crowded on matchday.
  • Uber and Didi are cheap and reliable — usually the preferred choice for tourists on matchday.
  • Don't drive: traffic around the Azteca is gridlocked 4+ hours around kickoff.
  • From MEX (Benito Juárez airport): 40 min by Metrobús or 30 min by Uber in light traffic.

🍽️ What to eat

  • Tacos al pastor — the city's signature dish. El Huequito and El Califa are tourist-friendly reliable chains.
  • Mercado de San Juan and Mercado Medellín — authentic market eating without the Zona Rosa mark-up.
  • Estadio Azteca concourses have limited cash-only food stalls — bring pesos in small denominations.

🛡️ Safety & matchday tips

  • Altitude: drink water, skip heavy alcohol on day one, plan light first day.
  • Taxis hailed on the street in tourist areas have higher rates of scams — always use Uber/Didi.
  • Estadio Azteca's neighbourhood (Santa Úrsula) is safe around matchday but stick to main streets after dark.

🎉 Fan zones & atmosphere

  • Zócalo (main square) — historic setting for the official Fan Festival screening.
  • Reforma Avenue — major stadia, landmarks and outdoor screens during the tournament.
